If there’s one thing we know as four rescue cats, it’s this: a soft place to land changes everything.
That’s exactly what One By One Cat Rescue in Temple, Pennsylvania has been doing since 1994 — giving abandoned, stray, and special-needs cats a second chance at the cozy indoor life we all dream of.
From feral kittens who learn to trust again to seniors who finally get their sunbeam, One By One Cat Rescue lives up to its name — because every single life matters.
Who They Are: Compassion in Action
Founded nearly 30 years ago, One By One Cat Rescue is a nonprofit, no-kill organization run entirely by volunteers. Their mission is simple — but mighty:
💛 Rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome cats and kittens in need across Berks and surrounding counties.
Unlike large shelters, One By One focuses on quality of care over quantity. Every cat receives individualized attention, top-notch veterinary care, and the love they deserve.
From bottle-feeding orphaned kittens to providing lifetime sanctuary for cats with chronic conditions, these volunteers pour their hearts into every tail and whisker.
Many of them have full-time jobs, families, and their own pets — but still show up for the cats. That’s the kind of love you can’t fake.
The Twitchy Movement: Where Hope Meets Healing
““It all started with one rescued cat, Cotton. Cotton had Cerebellar Hypoplasia which caused him to walk in odd, twitchy movements. After many years of love and care from his parents David and Wendy, Cotton passed away. However, Cotton lives on in this painting of him with a cup of coffee. This painting was so popular they sold prints of it, then cups, then coffee. Finally, they realized the potential good this movement could do for rescues and shelters across America.””
Through The Twitchy Movement, One By One raises awareness for special-needs cats and celebrates their unique beauty. Cats like Cotton may move differently, but they love, play, and thrive just like any other.
Their movement has become a community — showing adopters that disabilities don’t define a cat’s worth.
Inside Their Rescue: Love, Laundry, and a Lot of Litter
A day at One By One looks a little like this:
Volunteers cleaning enclosures while kittens chase broom bristles 🧹
Fresh blankets being folded and swapped out (within minutes of being furred again)
Cuddles, playtime, medication rounds, and feeding schedules perfectly orchestrated like a symphony of purrs
They run entirely on donations, adoption fees, and community support. Every dollar goes directly toward food, medical care, spay/neuter, and keeping cats safe until adoption day.
