When a Community Shows Up, Cats Feel It

We’ve learned something important in our months running this newsroom: you can feel generosity long before the numbers come in.

It sounds like keyboards tapping, notifications chiming, comments stacking up late at night. It looks like hoomans refreshing a page, deciding to bid five more dollars, smiling at screens while thinking about cats they may never meet.

That’s what the Berks Community Cats Christmas Online Auction felt like to us — and now that the final tally is in, we can say it out loud:

Together, this community raised $3,148.00 for cats who need it most.

Not from a gala.
Not from a black-tie fundraiser.
But from living rooms, kitchen tables, lunch breaks, and quiet moments of “I can do a little more.”

And little added up to something powerful.

Why This Auction Mattered So Much

This was Berks Community Cats annual Online Christmas Auction, and it carried more than just baskets and gift cards.

Every bid went directly toward:

  • Food for outdoor community cats

  • Veterinary care for kittens and adults

  • Foster support

  • Adoption events that change lives

From BCC’s Fundraising Team:

“We are overwhelmed with gratitude for every donor, bidder, and supporter who made this fundraiser possible!”

We understand that feeling. Gratitude keeps rescues alive.

The Joy of Bidding (From Cats Who Definitely Supervised)

We’ll admit it — watching our hoomans bid was wildly entertaining.

There was excitement. Strategy. Mild panic. A lot of “wait, what number are we on?” And the quiet thrill of realizing you can win something you normally wouldn’t splurge on — and help cats at the same time.

We personally won:

  • A Circadia facial set (luxury… apparently not for cats)

  • An automatic PetSafe feeder (this one felt personal)

That’s the magic of online auctions. You get the joy of winning, the fun of participating, and the deeper joy of knowing your money didn’t disappear into nothing — it became care, safety, and second chances.

From Auction to Adoption: December’s Real Wins

The auction wasn’t the only holiday miracle Berks Community Cats delivered.

The December 14th Adoption Fair brought something even bigger: homes.

Longer-term and older foster cats — the ones people sometimes overlook — were adopted for the holidays. Add a successful bake sale, festive decorations, dedicated volunteers, and adopters ready to say yes, and you get something that feels a lot like hope.

These cats found homes in December:
Loki, Starburst, Toeby, Foxy, Kahlua, Toast, Smoke, Peppermint Mocha, Cinder, Cola, Cheeto, Bunny, Juice, Paisley, Reese’s, Madonna, Owlette, Daphne, Velma, Duchess, Morris Jr., and Chloe/Princess.

That’s not a list.
That’s a legacy.

How the Auction Worked (And Why It Was Brilliant)

Part of what made this auction so accessible was how simple it was:

  • Items posted under the Discussion tab

  • Starting bids at $5

  • Comment to bid

  • Highest bid at closing time wins

  • Pickup at Pet Supplies Plus in Shillington

No complicated platforms. No barriers. Just community participation.

It made helping cats feel doable — and that matters.

What This Means for Community Cats

Events like this don’t just raise money. They build momentum.

They remind people that community cats matter. That rescues are powered by neighbors. That small actions — bidding, sharing, showing up — keep the work moving forward.

Berks Community Cats proved something important this December:

when people are invited in, they rise to the occasion.

If you bid — thank you.
If you donated — thank you.
If you adopted — thank you.
If you shared a post or told a friend — thank you.

This was just the first annual auction. And if this year taught us anything, it’s that this community is capable of extraordinary things when cats are involved.

Stick around. There’s more good ahead.
