PENNSYLVANIA — Wildlife rehabilitation center steps in after severely injured kitten is rescued from intentional fire in Edwardsville, PA

In a heartbreaking Memorial Day rescue out of Luzerne County, a tiny kitten now named Gravity is fighting to survive after being trapped inside a tent that was intentionally set on fire in Edwardsville, Pennsylvania.

According to the Pocono Wildlife Rehabilitation and Education Center, the kitten was discovered after an emergency call came in during the holiday — a time when many veterinary clinics and hospitals were closed.

Although the organization primarily cares for wildlife and does not typically accept domestic animals, staff said this was one of those situations where “turning away simply wasn’t an option.”

And after seeing the photos, it’s easy to understand why.

A Rescue That Was Never Supposed to Happen

From what the rescue shared publicly, individuals experiencing homelessness had reportedly been staying inside the tent before someone deliberately targeted and set it ablaze. Gravity was still inside.

The kitten survived, but not without injuries. Early images shared by the organization appear to show severe damage to her paws, possible burns, and signs of significant trauma.

By Tuesday morning, Gravity was scheduled to be evaluated by licensed veterinarians as the rescue prepared for potential:

  • burn treatment

  • smoke inhalation complications

  • infection risks

  • long-term recovery needs

The organization emphasized that this type of emergency veterinary care falls outside its normal wildlife rehabilitation funding.

Although we do not accept domestic animals, today was one of those situations where we simply could not turn our backs.

Community Response Begins Pouring In

Within hours of the fundraiser going live, hundreds of people began sharing Gravity’s story across Pennsylvania rescue groups and social media pages.

The response reflects something animal rescuers across the state know well:
when severe cruelty cases emerge, communities often mobilize quickly.

But emergency medical cases can become expensive just as fast.

For small nonprofits and rehabilitation centers, even a single intensive-care case can place sudden strain on already limited resources — especially during peak wildlife and kitten season.

What Happens Next for Gravity

Right now, the focus remains entirely on medical stabilization and recovery.

The rehabilitation center clarified that Gravity already has a permanent safe home waiting for her once she is medically cleared and stable enough to leave care.

For now, the priority is keeping her alive, comfortable, and medically supported after surviving something no animal should ever experience.

And while the internet moves quickly from one story to the next, cases like this often require weeks — or months — of ongoing treatment behind the scenes.
