PENNSYLVANIA — What started as a fundraising effort inside a local pet store has become a permanent new space for adoptable cats in Berks County.

Pet Supplies Plus in Shillington recently celebrated the opening of its new Community Cat Room, a dedicated adoption space created in partnership with Berks Community Cats.

The project was funded entirely through customer donations collected beginning in January 2026. By the end of the campaign, community members had contributed more than $2,300 toward the effort.

Those funds helped transform an underutilized VIP Petcare clinic room into a dual-purpose space that now serves both veterinary clinic operations and cat adoptions.

The grand opening took place on June 20.

A Different Adoption Experience

For many rescue cats, adoption events often mean spending time in temporary cages while waiting for potential adopters to stop by.

The new Community Cat Room was designed to offer something different.

Instead of individual cages, adoptable cats now have a dedicated space where they can play, explore, relax, and interact naturally with visitors.

The goal is simple: allow cats to show their personalities while giving potential adopters a better opportunity to connect with them.

Anyone who has ever adopted a cat knows that some felines immediately walk up to visitors demanding attention, while others need a little time before showing their playful or affectionate side.

Creating a room where cats can behave more naturally helps those personalities shine through.

Built by the Community

Perhaps the most remarkable part of the project is how it came together.

There was no major grant.

No large corporate donation.

Instead, the room was funded through countless small contributions made by local customers visiting the store.

According to Pet Supplies Plus, every donation helped move the project closer to reality.

It's the kind of community-driven effort that often goes unnoticed but creates lasting impact for animals in need.

Why Spaces Like This Matter

Adoption rooms have become increasingly popular among rescue organizations because they allow cats to experience a less stressful environment while waiting for homes.

Potential adopters also benefit.

Rather than meeting a cat through the bars of a cage, visitors can observe how cats move, play, interact, and respond to people in a more natural setting.

For rescue groups like Berks Community Cats, those interactions can help create stronger matches between cats and families.

And ultimately, that's what the room was built to do.

Help more cats find homes.

A Milestone Worth Celebrating

The Community Cat Room represents more than a renovation project.

It's a reminder of what can happen when local businesses, rescue organizations, and community members work together toward a common goal.

More than $2,300 was raised.

A permanent adoption space was created.

And countless future cats will now have a better opportunity to meet the families who may become their forever homes.

In a world that often feels overwhelmed by animal welfare challenges, it's a small but meaningful success story—and one that belongs to the entire community.
